The death threat to Kathy Sierra has once again spur the calls for adopting OpenID. Interestingly, Tim O'Reilly, the man who coined the famous term Web 2.0, has now called for a blogger's code of conduct.
One cannot help that the freedom of speech argument will come into play. Here are the seven rules which O'Reilly suggested in his article:
- Take responsibility not just for your own words, but for the comments you allow on your blog
- Label your tolerance level for abusive comments.
- Consider eliminating anonymous comments.
- Ignore the trolls.
- Take the conversation offline, and talk directly, or find an intermediary who can do so.
- If you know someone who is behaving badly, tell them so.
- Don't say anything online that you wouldn't say in person.
If you have recently start reading some blogs in the Singapore blogosphere, you will start to realize that some people start to violate these rules suggested. In any case, do we really need a code of conduct? The question can be broken down whether it is necessary or sufficient. I am not really sure whether people will want to adhere to such a code.
Thought I might just put the O'Reilly one for my own archive purposes.
